I have done a fair bit of research about Ella Fitzgerald and I have been listening to her music to become more familiar with the genre. I felt like I have been drawing a lot and researching a lot but I don’t think my research is actually informing my drawings much at this stage. I couldn’t think of a specific part of Ella Fitzgerald’s life that I felt like I could focus this project on but one thing I have found interesting is how her career has managed to span so many decades.
From her first performance in 1934 to her last performance in 1991, her singing career has entered into a total of seven decades. I think this is something I will be able to work with and this has already begun with my research into microphones through the decades and the changing hairstyles she had. I am going to continue looking at record sleeves (not just Fitzgerald’s records) to try and pick up on colours, compositions, patterns, etc the decades in the 1900s and whether there are any iconic aspects I can use in the images I will be producing.
