Because I don't have access to Photoshop on my macbook yet, I scanned in my images and used Pages to arrange the components to see what the compositions could look like.
I resized and rearranged the components and found that having the trumpet at an angle made the composition stronger.
Changing the angle of the trumpet made the composition less static, I think I like it more when it is pointing down and it also allows more space for Ella's face in the top right corner.
To show that Louis Armstrong is in the foreground I think he needs to be bigger. I will take my scans into Photoshop when I am in the studio but I will be working towards a composition like these two.
Colour
Adding colour made me start to think about how I am incorporating the record sleeves research I have done. These are not the actual colours I am planning on using although they do seem quite fitting. I think the bottom two ideas are more successful because the actual use of shapes is clearer. More development on this is needed, especially as I want to incorporate pattern and mark making but I am glad I have done this so that I can see what I am trying to achieve clearer than when it was just in my head.
This ink drawing is Norman Granz looking over his shoulder at ella performing.
coupe be seen as a first sighting or being proud of what he has helped her to achieve
She looks too close, like she is standing directly behind him.
Here she is quite small - it gives a sense of distance but there is a lot of white space and it looks like she is floating.
I flipped the image. Because we read left to right I wondered whether this would make it look more like he is looking back at her. I prefer it when he is looking towards the right because it is easier to read the image. We start from the top left corner and then the gaze of his eyes will lead you towards Ella in the background.
In this ink drawing of Ella, she looks quite old, I need to check her age and make sure that the ages of both of them match up.
Experimenting on screen made me realise I needed to do more roughs and become more clear on my idea to be most efficient with my time. I am feeling quite under pressure time-wise because my digital print slot is a good few days before the actual deadline so this needs to be done quite quickly.
I need to be more decisive.
More Roughs
I have decided on this to be my composition for this postcard. I have done some brief experiments with colour but looking past that, the idea of having Ella and a jazz band in the background sitting inside a square which is a different colour to the background.
