I selected certain areas to highlight with this gold/yellow colour. The most important is probably the crown because this is where the idea for using this colour originated from for me. I like how the microphone and crowd of people are also in colour as if her voice is feeding them life. I also think it balances the composition. With a very soft brush, I added a gradient to the people and also highlighted the skin tones to make them stand out slightly. The image on the right is a potential final poster for me.
I thought about adding colour to the whole image so I added a layer of low opacity yellow and then changed the settings of the layer to achieve these different effects. I like the one in the top middle because the colour looks gold-like and the black is still strong. I think most of the others look too faded to be able to show Ella as a powerful woman.
I split the image so that the colour only affected Ella and the background but I don't like how strong the contrast is between this and the plain black and white in the foreground.
One of the layer settings I selected made the background a complimentary purple of the yellow I was using. I decided I didn't like how dark this was, especially alongside the black of her dress.
I learnt that clicking the checkerboard icon locks the pixels so you can just adult the colour. This was useful to me because I could make the colour slightly more orange so that it looked more gold overall. One of my worries is how this will look when it is printed because I want it to look gold and full of life and not turn out a dull brown.
I feel like I have combined both of my ideas of filling the whole page with colour and also selecting aspects because I have deselected Ella's face and hand to make her stand out, while everything else is still in gold. I think having her in black and white makes her appear timeless, which she is.
