Person of Note - Poster roughs and Research

Finally I have an idea for my poster - I am going to base it around Ella being called the 'queen of jazz'. I have been aware of this name from the beginning of my project but thought it was quite cliche, but now I am starting to see what I can do with this idea.

These are some roughs. The idea for this is that Ella is at the top with her crown on and the people below are all jazz musicians to show that she inspired the jazz industry and is basically a leading figure during this era. I could put some specific people in here such as Marilyn Monroe, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and I could research more as well. I want her to look powerful to show that she is like a ruler over these people but not in an intimidating way.

The sketch at the top is trying to show her singing into the microphone and the microphone wire cradling the people in the jazz industry beneath her. I like how this idea shows that her voice kind of feeds inspiration to these people and visually is looks like a circuit that is only complete with her voice.

I personally like the rough in the bottom left because she is in a strong pose, she looks powerful but still happy this is exactly what I am trying to achieve. I will have to consider the composition of the people at the bottom in more depth for this to work. This composition reminds me of an image by Eleni Kalorkoti.

Although this image is about loneliness which is a totally different topic to what I am dealing with now, I am taking inspiration from its composition as I think it is really successful. Having the large figure at the top contrasts strongly with the smaller, more intricate use of shape in the bottom half. The rooftops are all pointing up and leading towards this bigger figure and I think this is something I should consider with the figures in the bottom half of my poster - they need to lead the eye towards the main focus of Ella and not detract from her.
