Picture Book - Talk with Matt in the Studio

After my crit the other day, I spoke to Matt in the studio about the direction my project was going in. Although I am pleased with the drawings I am producing, I feel this is because they show good technical ability and not because they are appropriate to the topic. Matt felt that I may be returning to an old style of drawing that I have recently been progressing away from. This conversation made me realise that I need to keep pushing my media experimentation to evoke emotion and meaning within my images. I can see now that with my previous drawings, I was getting too caught up with being technically precise with both drawing and photoshop and I was neglecting the experimentation aspect which has led to successful results in previous projects.

After this, I researched the work of Marion Deuchars, I was inspired by her work for Carluccio's to move towards a looser style of drawing. Although the vibrant colours in these pieces would not be appropriate for my book, there is so much more freedom to be expressive when you are not tied down to being technically accurate.
