Picture Book - Page 9, 12 and 7

Page 9

Continuing with my previous photoshop experiments, I arrived at this for my final image of the girls in the agency for domestic servants. I like the subtlety of the colours and how all of them are looking in different directions as if they all have their own things to think and worry about.

I experiemented a lot with the colours, brightness, contrast, saturation, etc, for this image and I may have struggled to be decisive on which variation works best. I think this may become an issue if I spend this much time deciding on each of my pieces because I have less than a week left to finish my book. I need to make more of an effort to be quicker and more effective at making decisions.

This was one of my drawings done with gouache while I was experimenting with this media. I really like the emotion in this image and I feel that trying to recreate this image would take away the immediacy of the brushstrokes. I continued to alter this image on photoshop, adding and removing area of highlights and shadows before settling on an image I thought was powerful and emotive.

I thought the smudging of the paint made the image look a bit lost on the page so I wanted some colour to draw the eye from this towards the face. I enlarged the size of my brush and experimented with different ones before deciding on this one which created what looks like long triangles - I used it in directing towards the face so this is where the eye will be drawn to. This has made me think about being bolder with pattern and texture in the future because it can add a lot of drama.

Problem: I had a problem with layers here because I had used a white paintbrush tool to get rid of some marks on the left hand side where I should have used the eraser tool.

Problem Solving: In this case I had to take steps backwards to delete my mistake and then continue. This mistake taught me to always use the appropriate tool and to try and do as many functions as possible on separate layers so that it is easier to go back and correct something.

I had a lot of problems creating this image, I had a few sketches I wanted to use in my final artwork so I scanned these in and arranged them in a composition I was happy with. Originally I just wanted to have scary looking men on this page but I didn't think this would make the theme of 'traffickers' clear enough so I decided to include a young girl in the image as well. Her red clothing exaggerates the danger she is in.

I thought I could make the image more intense by making one or all of the traffickers look at the girl so I tried to adjust the eyes by using various selection tools and the free transform action. I realised here that I was getting too caught up in Photoshop and I was relying on it to do things which would be better to do by hand so I went back to my brush pens and drew the face how I wanted it.

I adjusted the output levels to make the faces grey rather than white and proceeded to add more shadow with a soft brush.

I have spent quite a lot of time on these first few images and I need to speed up if I am going to get them all finished on time for by printing session booked for Thursday morning. I am getting quicker on Photoshop but because there are so many options available to me when using it, I find it difficult to make decisions without doing a lot of experimentation beforehand.
