'Strategic image making, used within the context of visual communication to convey an idea’

The range of image making processes relevant to illustration are wider than just drawing and painting. Consider costume, performance, model making, set design, etc.

Polly Becker

Polly Becker uses found objects, photographs and bits and pieces to create these assemblages which appear fun and characterful. This is still illustration yet there is no drawing involved in the final piece.

If an image is conveying a meaning which was intentional and has been strategically considered by the creator, then its can be argued that it is illustration.

I am presuming these are photographs which have then been photoshopped to remove the figures who were holding the ribbons. I am not sure what the meaning behind these images are but they are inspiring me to experiment with photoshop.

Lord Whitney

This image looks like it has been highly edited however it is a genuine photograph and all the perceived edits are actually real life. I think this is a clever way of giving the image an effect you want but without relying on digital media to do it for you.

Photography - capture an idea within the frame.

Craft and making - give materials a new meaning so they function as an illustration.
