Self Evaluation
I feel like I have drained my mind of everything I could think of for these themes this week and this is evident in my excessive lists in my sketchbook and on my A2 sheets where I have drawn out my ideas. I had to research some topics to find something for each letter, this was especially helpful on my 'famous people with ginger hair' theme and for finding out British inventions. I also researched reference images as well, mainly using the internet but sometimes books or photos I had taken previously. I tried not to copy the photographs and just use it to inform my drawing but I found this difficult to stick to when I was purely just drawing objects. Some topics were difficult to research such as things involved with owning a dog or keeping warm - for this I had to use my experiences and imagination which I think makes my drawings more relatable yet still individual to me. Drawing has definitely allowed me to visualise my ideas, see how the poster could work and recognise areas for improvement. I re-drew certain scamps I was not happy with which shows a development in my drawings. There was also a selection process occurring when going from a list of numerous options to choosing which one would produce the most interesting or humorous outcome.
In response to my feedback, I narrowed my selection down to the themes with more of an idea behind them rather than the ones just presenting information. These included, making the world a better place, owning a dog, objects made from vegetables and ways of keeping warm. In the crit, I was told that these themes were more quirky and unusual and they found more enjoyment in working out what each letter represented. From these four, I was torn between the making a world a better place theme and the vegetable objects; I feel these are both really fun ideas and this was reciprocated by the other students in my crit.
'Everyday Objects Made From Vegetables'
I have decided to go ahead with this theme because I received a lot of good feedback about it, both during and outside of my crit. I think it will be challenging to make the vegetables and objects recognisable at the same time, especially if I only use sections of the vegetable. I intend to adopt a playful tone of voice as this will relate to the imaginative, fantasy theme. This will be a novelty poster based on pure nonsense that I hope will appeal to people with a certain childish sense of humour. I imagine it on the wall in a home environment of adults who never really grew up but the simplicity of the idea behind it means that children will also be able to relate to it.
The next step in the development of my poster is to research different types of vegetables and maybe visit the supermarket to get a better idea of the shapes of the ones I am less familiar with. I am aiming to not use the same vegetable twice in my poster to get a variation of imagery and also to push myself and my idea. I am going to experiment with black line and maybe incorporate some tone later on, but nothing too heavy or complex. At the moment I am keen on working with fine liners and dip pens and ink but I want to try out pencil crayon and felt tips as these might be more appropriate in terms of creating a fun and playful aesthetic.
