Initially - Development

After deciding to do my poster on the theme of objects made from vegetables, I looked back at my previous roughs and selected which ones I wasn't happy with. I didn't think the drum, ink pen, jigsaw, q-tips or necklace were working very well because the vegetable or the object weren't clearly identifiable. I wrote out a new list of objects and potential vegetables I could use to construct them, I also wanted to challenge myself to not use the same vegetable twice to make the poster more interesting and varied. This proved very difficult so I have used some vegetables more than once but changed the viewpoint, for example, full views and cross sections.

The objects I decided to use were: abacus, basketball, comb, dish, earphones, fan, globe, hanger, ironing board, jug, key, lamp, mop, needle, oboe, plug, quill, radio, scissors, toothbrush, umbrella, vase, watch, xylophone, yoyo, zip

I briefly thought about using green as my chosen colour for this poster because of the link between vegetables and 'greens'. However, I thought this could be misleading when trying to identify the vegetables that aren't green, so I am sticking to black and white for this task.

I have continued to use my sketchbook to test out techniques and to make sure I am happy with how I am going to draw something before I commit to putting it on my poster.

I experimented with the shape of the pumpkin basketball using a dip pen and ink. The third image shows a change in the shape of the pumpkin but I decided against this because if I start changing the natural shapes of the vegetables then they will start to become less recognisable. It is especially important that the shape is representative of the actual vegetable when I don't have colour to make it any clearer. The drawing on the far right was done in a black marker pen - I had said at the end of last week that I want these drawings to have a playful feel about them and I thought that using a thicker pen would make the shape appear simpler and bolder. I didn't like the effect this pen had on my drawing so I plan to inject some life and depth into my drawings through using ink washes.

I was trying to show the shape of the onion here using ink washes and allowing the ink to bleed. I really like the patchy, uneven effect of the middle drawing because it describes the shape of the vegetable and the texture of its surface well. I feel this also injects a bit of life into the images as well as the application of ink appears quite carefree and relaxed even though it is still controlled.

For the letter 'L', I initially had a lamp made from a lettuce but since I adapted my idea to not use the same vegetable twice, I changed this to an artichoke. I didn't think the artichoke was working as well as a lamp so I flipped it and turned it into a lampshade which I feel is more effective.
