The Dam Keeper

Last night I watched a short animated film called 'The Dam Keeper'. It was written and directed by Daisuke Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo and was released in 2014 in the USA. It was quite a sad story with some uplifting moments and I thought the overall aesthetic of the animation was soft and textured. I'm blogging about this film because the characters in it made me think more about the metaphors I had been thinking of for this authors brief. In the film, Tsutsumi and Kondo used certain animals to represent the personalities of the characters. For example, the downtrodden main character was a small pig and the contrasting creative, lively and confident friend was a fox. The two characters who performed the main incident of bullying were a crocodile which shows a nasty and vicious trait and a hippopotamus whose size represented  an overwhelming and intimidating nature.

Character design is one of my weak points so I am thinking that it may work better for me to think of an animal which can be used as a metaphor to describe the characters in the book. I want to experiment with this but if it doesn't go as planned, I could still use some recognisable features or shapes from animals to use in my images.
