After Effects Animation Research

  • Self-promotional video sting by Tom Lennon.
  • Narrative: I can't put my finger on a narrative here only that at the beginning it is like he is building his company from scratch by bringing in the separate lines and then filling up the lettering.
  • Sequence: There are a clear sequence of events happening, each one only lasting a few seconds.
  • Composition: The composition is mainly based around being central with a bit of side to side movement around the middle. Everything is kept simple and to the point.
  • Pace: Steady pace, fitting to the music. Suggests he is an easy person to get along with and doesn't over complicate things.

  • Unused E4 sting by Will Rose created using After Effects.
  • Narrative: It is a very short animation so it would be hard to establish a complex narrative but from the zooming in through the trees, I am gathering that these monkeys are being discovered in the depths of the forest, as if someone has been following the sound.
  • Sequence: There isn't a sequence of events happening here because most of the movements occur repeatedly throughout the entire animation. The movement of the characters is minimal but in time with the music.
  • Composition: There is a strong sense of foreground, mid ground and background. I think the zooming in on the scene makes it look like more of the composition is moving when actually they are stationary images.
  • Pace: Slow and relaxed. There is still a steady beat in the music running through this which is enhanced by the movement of the characters.
* I quite like the idea of a sense of discovery, I think it might work well for mystery novels because it could show things becoming clearer as more things are exposed.

  • Animated advert using Anime Studio Pro and After Effects.
  • Heavily influenced by Saul Bass.
  • Narrative: There is a story being told here where the images are making suggestions about the speech which are misleading to the actual purpose of the advert. It moves from the words 'attractive' and 'models' being visually associated with women to then being associated with the cars instead.
  • Sequence: I'd say there are only four main key frames in this animation; the legs closeup, the woman at the door, the woman with the car and the end frame with the company name. Obviously there are key frames between these but the sequence of the animation is kept simple with only a few events occurring.
  • Composition: There is a lot to do with scale here, for example to closeups of the legs contrasts greatly with the very small scale figure walking out of the door and across the scene.
  • Pace: It is all quite slow and suggestive apart from at around 13secs where the figure rushed to the car door and then the car speeds off. This adds an element of excitement and haste. It then slows down again at the end to display the company name.
