Composition - Line of Sight Task

I struggled during the roughing stages of this task because I didn't want a really obvious line of sight, I wanted to try and make the suggestions slightly more subtle. I experimented with a few different viewpoints of someone hailing a cab and tried to work around the main components of the person and the cab by adding in other components leading your eye a certain way.

I think some of my roughs could have been successful if pursued but they weren't really relevant to the line of sight task so I didn't feel they were appropriate. In my last few roughs I was experimenting with the same idea, changing a few bits here and there and I finally decided on this idea.

  • The edge of the puddle in the foreground leads towards the drain which then leads your eye to the woman's feet.
  • The subtle road markings in the bottom corner are pointing towards the woman and so is the zebra crossing further up.
  • I tried to make the other pedestrians on the path lead our eye towards the woman by having the dog pulling in her direction and the man's collapsed umbrella pointing towards her too.
  • The traffic light hanging from above provides a line for the eye to follow, this leads to her umbrella and then to her.
  • I added a dark, vertical drainpipe which leads directly to her and the curve of there canopy in the same area directs your eye down towards her.
I added colour to these to see how this could work. I thought yellow was most appropriate to make it clear that the taxi was in fact a New York cab.

Final Image

I think that overall this is a satisfying image to look at but I am still unsure wether the lines of sight I had initially intended to put in place are clear. Although other people have said that the lines lead towards the lady in the yellow coat which is what I had planned, I think the eye is drawn towards the top left corner into the distance. This isn't helped by the fact the taxis are also in yellow because it draws more attention to them. I think the line of sight helps you understand what is happening in the picture because you see the woman hailing a cab and then you notice the two taxis that have already passed. To improve this I could have added a face to the woman because her gaze could have shown that she is looking towards the foreground for another cab to arrive which would then take a bit of the attention away from the two cabs that have already gone by.
