Drawing from Reference
I used the internet and some books from the library (referenced in my notebook) to read about Lhasa as a religious location and also find images to work from and get some ideas for potential postcards.
I learnt about why Buddhists partake in prostrating which is where they lower themselves to the floor in prayer, usually when entering a temple or on pilgrimage, to purify their negativity and bad karma. It is a symbol of being weak and having a lesser importance, it also can show emotional exhaustion.
Looking at Tibetan architecture made me realise that the building I have drawn in the middle at the bottom of this page is quite iconic. Its shape is unique and recognisable so this may be good to use in my postcard.
Roughs
My first few roughs were quite complex, looking at clothing in detail and some complex architecture. I like the roughs that are more symmetrical as I think these would work well on Illustrator. I think I will move forward with the roughs of the woman prostrating on the floor. The bottom right rough on my first sheet has the most potential in my opinion as it incorporates a the woman, the building and the mountains in the background. It is difficult to imagine how this will look on Illustrator especially as it is a program I am not really familiar with. I feel I may need to add a few more things in to the frame to keep the composition interesting but at the same time, I am wary of overcomplicating the image.
