Greetings From... - Lourdes Roughs

My research of Lourdes as a pilgrimage location was focussed mainly around the grotto where the statue of the Virgin Mary stands. I picked up on the iconic features of this such as the statue itself and the display of candles. I felt there wasn't as much imagery to work with here as I have had with some of my other locations so I looked at Lourdes Cathedral as well as this would hopefully make the city more recognisable if it was used in my postcard.

When considering composition, the proportions of the statue meant that I instinctively started doing roughs for a portrait postcard. However, I knew that my other postcards would probably work better as landscape so I had to try and alter my compositions and be a bit more abstract to make the components fit the frame.

I like the idea of zooming in on one section of the statue, particularly the praying hands as this is another visual symbol relating to religion. I found it difficult to place the Cathedral in Lourdes in a landscape composition without having it really small so I think if I combine the statue and some zoomed in elements of the cathedral, the location may be more recognisable.

Is the cathedral recognisable enough?
Which parts will be covered by the figure?
