I took this book out from the library as it had reference imagery to work on, some specific to the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca but other imagery related to the muslim religion in general. I used this book and the internet to find reference images for these sketches.
I was trying to keep things very simple with these first roughs but I realised there was probably not enough information for the specific location to be recognisable.
How much information is needed?
Can I keep this really simple?
Some of these roughs were inspired by a tapestry found in the book above and others stemmed from an initial sketch in my notebook which was a birds eye view of Mecca with the Ka-ba in the centre.
I like the composition on the top left because it fills the frame but the image is apse cropped to focus in on the Ka-ba which is a key feature in Mecca. I also like the fact that this is symmetrical because I am trying to connect my four postcards through making them all have a symmetrical composition.
