Greetings from... - Jerusalem roughs

These sketches were done using reference images found online. I think the most recognisable building in Jerusalem is The Dome of the Rock which has the gold, domed roof. I started sketching this but, like my other postcards, I didn't want it to revolve around architecture. Working from photographs of Jewish people on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, I tried to create their figures using just black shapes because this would be easier to transfer into illustrator later on if I decided to use them.

The Star of David is a key symbol of Judaism and the same star also features on the Israeli flag which is where Jerusalem is located. I have a feeling that the location of this postcard may not be very clear despite the use of visual symbols I am planning on. If this is the case, I may incorporate this symbol in some way to provide quite a big clue about the religion and city.

The wailing wall is a key feature in Jerusalem and it is where people go to leave prayers and to feel close to their God. I think these bottom two designs are making the composition overcomplicated - I don't feel it is necessary to have the buildings in the background and it also makes the wall look smaller than it is. Having the stones of the wall fill the entire page emphasises the scale of it in relation to the man.

I like the rough on the top left because it matches the composition of my other postcards so far and I think if I draw the hat correctly, he should be recognisable as a Jewish man even from behind.
