My tutorial with Teresa got me questioning why I actually chose Scandinavian lifestyle as the basis for my final major project. I believe this is quite a selfish project for me and a lot of it is about how I have adapted my own life over the past few years to suit what I like, who I am and how I work.
Why does Scandinavian culture resonate with me?
I love the simplicity of it all. I like the balance that their culture has between solitude and socialising and the attitude they have to not needing material things to satisfy their pride. From what I have seen and heard, their true pride lies in their country - its physical landscape and all that it stands for. I think their culture resonates with me because I like cleanliness, tidiness, quietness and efficiency. I also like the equality that comes with Scandinavian society, the almost non-existence of classes means a much more harmonious life with others. It's almost like everyone has something in common before even meeting and I imagine it would minimise conflicts involving ego, wealth and status. These people seem to keep themselves to themselves, I think they are quietly mysterious and I would love to visit these places in the future and truly experience what they are all about.
How does it make me feel?
It feels cosy and it makes me feel at ease, almost like a breath of fresh air. It is un-cluttered, a space to think clearly and empty your mind. Like I mentioned before, it seems harmonious and relatively stress free (I suppose this is easy to say looking in from the outside). I think the welfare state system plays a big part in the overall comfort and happiness of these nations. It gives everyone a good chance in life and I think there is a lot that our country can learn from looking north.
