This tutorial cleared up a few things in my mind. I had reached the point where I had got an idea of what I wanted my final outcomes to be but this was still to broad and unrefined for this point in the project. I have decided now that my final outcomes for my final major project will be editorial pieces. I have not done a purely editorial project since first year so I feel like this is a little bit of a risk for me. However, taking the product application route feels a bit like the easy option at this point. Defining the success of a 'nice cushion' is much more subjective than whether a drawing works alongside the text it was created for. Working for an editorial purpose will give my work more direction and give my project more structure and definable outcomes. It will also force me to consider concept and show that my work can be more than just decorative.
I will then propose that the imagery created for these could be re-purposed for other applications such as homewares or packaging. This is still an area that I am really interested in but I just don't want it to be the primary focus of this project. The categories of editorial pieces I will be working to fit well with potential product applications. Food illustration could be applied to kitchenware, food packaging or recipe books and illustrations for beauty/style features could be applied to fashion textiles or packaging for products.
I also wanted to clarify that the research I am doing into Scandinavia is purely an inspiration for the way I will approach these editorial projects. I am not going to be illustrating just for articles about Scandinavia. I want to identify themes in the articles that connect to my research and then use what I have learnt as inspiration to add a Scandi element to the illustrations.
So, the themes I work with are related to Scandinavian lifestyle and the images I make are related to Scandinavian design.
I am aiming to get ten articles completed for my final submission but have allowed some room for manoeuvre in case things don't go to plan. These will be presented on boards, mocked up onto an existing article. The ones I have found so far have been in physical publications but I think it would be good for some of them to be seen in an online format too.
