Illustration Friday Week 1 - Punch

Initial Ideas
I brainstormed some ideas for what the word punch could mean and other words relating to these: fist, hitting, boxing, punch bag, alcohol, cocktail, fruit, drink, Punch and Judy, puppet, character, clocking off, tickets, hole punch, punchline.

I had browsed the submissions already on the Illustration Friday website and most of them were based around hitting, a fruit punch or a Punch puppet. I wanted to try something different and not be influenced by these so I took forward the idea of a hole punch.

Roughs
My initial roughs (page 1) were varied but I feel I could have been more experimental with different ideas. I looked at the possibility of a pattern, paper having holes punched in it and the individual paper circles falling from the base of the hole punch. This last idea was my favourite as I felt it had the most movement in it as an image. It is also one of those little things in life that can be really annoying when the little paper circles fall out and go absolutely everywhere so I thought this might be something people could connect with on some level.

I did some more roughs based around this idea and used my own hole punch as reference for the drawing, holding it at different angles to see how it could be positioned within the frame. All of my roughs had been in a square frame so far but this was unintentional. I think for future task it might be better to draw boxes of varied proportions to force me to be creative with my compositions. The final idea I am going ahead with is in a landscape frame with the line of sight going from top left to the bottom right by the movement of the paper circles.

Inspiration

I took inspiration from the work of Michael Craig Martin whose work I am already familiar with. His   images of everyday objects are brought to life with strong use of flat colour and interesting, and unrealistic compositions. I hope that his work will help me to avoid overcomplicating this image.

Drawing
I sketched the hole punch from observation and went over this in finalisers of various thicknesses to capture the form of the object. For some reason I was finding it hard to have control over my line work today. This might be because I am very aware that this is meant to be a short brief and I didn't want to spend the entire day on it, although I still didn't want to rush it. I drew the circles in finalisers too, I made them various sizes and drawn from different angles (some are elliptical) to give the impression that some are closer and some are further away.

Photoshop
I scanned my drawings into photoshop, edited the levels and cleaned them up a bit and then arranged them into the composition of my final rough. I did a lot of designing and decision making while on screen which I think worked well for this brief because I wanted to keep the time spent on it to a minimum. I played around with the fill of the circles and made it into a mixture of colours, some with outlines and some without. I wanted it to look like a small explosion and release of energy and I think I have captured this by having so many things overlapping in this area. The darker shapes with no outline resemble shadows but not to specific pieces of paper, I think it positively adds to the chaos of this are of the image which contrasts well with the structures line work of the hole punch itself.

Colour and Cropping
I briefly experimented with colour but changing the levels and hue and saturation. I decided to stick with the orange colour scheme as it felt energetic and fitting to the theme. For the cropping of the image, I took some off the top and bottom to erase wasted space and this seemed to frame the contents best.

Submission
Im not really sure how but I managed to submit my image twice and don't know how to delete one of them. I don't think this is really a problem but obviously next time I will try just to do it once.

Evaluation
I think I have done well to produce this in a couple of hours because I am used to spending a lot longer than this on a final piece of work. I think that my line work could have been neater, especially on the circles but on the other hand, I like how the shapes aren't all uniformed as I think the image would look too structured. I think composition is something I also need to work on, like I said before, I need to produce roughs in frames of various proportions to come up with a more interesting use of space.
