I See Faces - Monoprinting

I have briefly used mono printing before but I couldn't remember a lot about it so I felt like I was learning the process again. I decided to work with this character as it is made up of very simple shapes and I felt I would be able to focus more on the process itself rather than getting caught up with fiddly stencils and complex designs. We were working purely with cyan, magenta and yellow printing ink.

After doing some normal mono printing, I experimented with the monotype process which involves putting the paper face down onto a bed of ink and drawing into the back of it with a pen/pencil/tool to pick up the ink in certain areas. I added an outline and features to these prints below using this technique.

These last two images were created using my stencils from the workshop. I like the textures that have been created from either contamination of the ink rollers or from ink being put onto the plastic plates which have just been cleaned so there is still soap residue on the surface.

I think the discovering new textures was the most enjoyable part of the mono printing workshop because it emphasised how you can only create that print once so they are all individual. I would have liked to overlap my colours more to see what I could achieve but within the allotted time of the workshop, I think I learnt a lot about the process and produced some outcomes which will be beneficial to my current project. This is definitely a technique I would like to experiment more with maybe for a future brief. I think I may have held myself back here a bit by focussing too much on this character and the brief that I am currently working on. I think if I did this workshop purely for experimentation I could have come up with a lot more interesting and unique outcomes.
