I felt quite daunted by this brief because character design is something I have very little experience of. I like to draw faces but usually from reference so creating my own character seemed like a real challenge. I started out by doing lots of quick drawings in my sketchbook to discover ways of drawing faces which I may not have considered before.
I am trying to keep them simple and focus on the main features of eyes, mouth and nose.
To loosen up, I drew random shapes onto black paper and tried to form these into faces. I took the face from the top left and developed it by drawing it over and over again (below).
I realised there are so many variations of ways to draw a face because your eyes immediately try and piece together the features of a face if there is something suggesting a few features.
Experimenting with various media helped this exploration because it pushed me to think and work in different ways. I tried to use media that couldn't be rubbed out so that I was having to make a commitment with my lines and maybe something good would come from a mistake. I think the profile done in chalk on the far right is quite effective. It is so simple but still recognisable as a face.
To try and get some more ideas flowing, I ripped up some paper in a variety of shapes and drew into and round these to make them into characters. These simple exercises have made me more confident with moving on to the task of thinking of sixty characters.
